Some quick midweek wisdom from me today! I love this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson as a reminder that you can decide what you want to be, pick out your future, and make your own destiny. After all, whoever we think we are, we become!
“The only person you destined to become, is the person you decide to be!” Isn’t this great and so empowering? To me it reminds me that you’re not at the mercy of fate or chance – it means really only you get to decide who you are! But this also means you can’t pass the buck. If you are unhappy with something, you shouldn’t blame something or someone else. You can’t say, “I’m stuck”– because you can always decide to shift your perspective, head in a different direction, and make different choices. And you can’t pretend that you don’t have a choice–because you always do! You just have to choose to choose…
I find I have to remind myself of this quite a bit! Do you? Happy Hump Day!
It’s that time of the week again! I am happy to say I survived the move this weekend and I am slowly starting to settle into my new home. OK I still don’t have everything packed away, I need to do an IKEA shop this weekend and my internet isn’t running at my house yet – but aside those teething problems I am loving my new little house. Waking up with the sun streaming into my lounge from my wee little garden (!!) has definitely been putting a big smile on my face in the mornings!
For this week’s mid-week motivation I thought I’d share some rules on ‘how to be happy’. They aren’t official rules or anything but I came across this great Rules to be Happy Tumblr Page that you can follow to get your daily dose of inspiration on how to be happy. There are so many great ones but here’s just a few of them that I loved….
You are unique! You were created to make a mark in this life and not just born to survive. And no ‘normal’ framework for a human being. Accept your differences in a positive manner. For instance “Yeah, I have big feet, but thats what makes me me!”
Don’t expect anything from anyone! When expectations are not fulfilled, it gives you pain. When you get something without expecting, it gives you pleasure. Do your best! Keep doing your part.
Wake up with a smile on your face! Today is a new day. There are opportunities and blessings waiting for you. Open up your heart to receive them. Look on the bright side of the day. You are going to meet people today that will respond to your smile, your small acts of kindness. Be willing to take time to listen to someone, to visit someone, to call someone on the phone.
Stop over-thinking! Don’t dwell on negative events. “We sometimes think we have to keep ruminating over a problem to resolve it, but we often end up just going in circles,”. “Break the cycle by distracting yourself with an enjoyable activity.”
Live for today! Don’t dwell on the past, on things that went wrong or previous failures. Similarly, don’t dream about an idealised future that doesn’t exist or worry about what hasn’t happened yet. Happy people live for the now; they have positive mind sets. If you can’t be happy today, what makes you think tomorrow will be different?
Keep trying! One of the key things that you need to remember is to never be discouraged; failure is a part of life, and it happens naturally. If you are so disillusioned that you never want to try again, at least be comforted by the fact that you made an attempt.
Remember that nothing in life is permanent! Where you are today is not necessarily where you will be tomorrow, or next week or next month. Think about what your life was like five years ago and you no doubt will notice how much it has changed since then. Whatever you are feeling right now, whatever condition your life is in, it’s temporary. At any moment it can, and it will, change.
Be grateful for everything you’ve got! When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value.
Step out if your comfort zone! Take a chance on people with whom you might not usually interact. it’s an opportunity to make a connection with interesting people you might not otherwise encounter.”
Stop worrying! Don’t take yourself too seriously. Happy people don’t worry and they recognise that 90 percent of worries never come true.
Learn from your past! Something good always comes out of everything, even if it was a very bad experience. Find the lesson involved and try not to make the same mistake twice.
Oh and finally STOP trying to be happy! If you take away one thing from this post, let this be it: to be happy, there’s a decent chance you’ll have to stop trying to be happy. Sorry to get all zen-master on you, but that’s the way it is. Happy hump day!
Sorry the blog has been a little more quiet recently; my day job and changes in my life have taken up a bit more of my time! For today’s midweek inspiration I love the reminder about following your dreams, taking risks and not being afraid to make changes because life is happening NOW!
One BIG change in my life at the moment is that I am moving house! Yes this weekend I will be leaving my lovely flat-share in Notting Hill for a new adventure in London – because I am going to move into a 1 bedroom apartment, all on my own.
Now, I have lived on my own before but for the last 3 years in London I’ve been in flat-shares. And as much as I have really enjoyed this, it’s time for a change again and I just really crave having a little place to call my home. Even though I won’t be moving too far from where I live now (to Kilburn Park) I do have to admit that I will miss living right in Notting Hill. But because rent in London is pretty unaffordable (especially when paying it all on your own) I have to move a little bit further out. Luckily I have my big Dutch bike to get around everywhere quickly and most of my friends still live very close-by so I don’t think it will affect my lifestyle too much.
So yes at the moment my life is pretty hectic to get ready to move this weekend (wardrobe clear out very necessary…). And even though change can be a little scary sometimes, I am excited about my move because there is just no point in waiting and worrying about change, we may as well just take the risk and live our dreams! Life is happening now….
I am so busy and under pressure at work at the moment, that sometimes I can feel a bit stressed out just thinking about how on earth I will get everything done. When I came across this quote recently, it reminded me that all I can do really is my best. Because in life and in general; you can do anything, but you just can’t do everything!
Do you ever get a bit overwhelmed too with the all things you may need or even just want to do but don’t know how you will do it all? I am really trying to just take every day (or hour for that matter) at a time and focus on all the things I can do, and then doing those things to the best of my abilities. And to do the best you can, you have to pick your priorities because unfortunately doing everything just isn’t always possible.
I have to say though that this week I am very glad it is Wednesday already because it means I am over the hump again and that the weekend is on its way! Happy Hump Day everyone :)
This weekend I was back home in the Netherlands to spend some quality time with my family. The reason for this particular visit however was rather special. Because about two weeks ago I officially became an aunty for the first time! My brother and his wife had a beautiful and healthy little boy and on Saturday I got to meet him for the first time. It was such a special moment to meet this new addition to our family. He’s so tiny and incredibly cute and it really made me realise how amazing the human body works to create this precious little person and how he looks so much like my brother already. I think I will be going home a bit more this year because I really don’t want to miss anything about this little boy growing up. I am definitely one proud aunty!
When I am at home, one of the things I always want to ensure I do is going for a walk or run on the beach (as seen here). My parents live about 5 minutes away from the coast so it’s lovely to get outside and to feel the wind blowing through my hair, and letting all my worries & thoughts just disappear for a moment. The beach truly is my happy place…
The beach + family = Home Sweet Home
What is your happy place? Happy Hump Day :)
