Hello everyone! It’s that time of the week again for some quick midweek inspiration. The idea of “living in the moment” has inspired a lot of motivational posters and T-shirts, but it’s really a very important concept. You’ve probably heard many variations of this quote like; “Live like there’s no tomorrow, live as if you’ll die today!” & “There are 7 days a week, and SOMEDAY isn’t one of them.”
Living in the moment takes practice, but when we learn how to live this way, it means we will lead a fuller life and appreciate the beauty in every activity every second of the day. Here are some quick tips on how to make sure you live for the present and live for today…(I am still working on it)..
Focus on the now. In order to live in the moment, you need to focus on the now. Focus on what you’re doing. Shut off the TV, turn off the computer, slow down and savor the present. This means try and Do one thing at a time. Single-task, don’t multi-task. When you’re pouring water, just pour water. When you’re eating, just eat.
Pay attention to the small things. Notice the world around you: the small things. Be thankful for them. Living for the moment and taking notice of the small things will help you cultivate more positive experiences.
Breathe, you’re alive. Sometimes just pay attention to your breath! As you focus your attention on your breath, you’ll notice that your breath is neither voluntary or involuntary. It is something that you do, but at the same time something that “does you”. When you focus your attention on your breath, you come back into relationship with reality, because like breath, reality is both something you do and something that “does you”. It is co-creative. Practice conscious breathing to bring your mind back to the present.
When you are talking to someone, be present! How many of us have spent time with someone but have been thinking about what we need to do in the future? Or thinking about what we want to say next, instead of really listening to that person? Instead, focus on being present, on really listening, on really enjoying your time with that person.
Smile :) If you want to know how to live in the moment, you just have to take a look in the mirror and smile. Smile — it can influence how you feel.
Do less and put space between things! Manage your schedule so that you always have time to complete each task. Don’t schedule things close together — instead, leave room between things on your schedule. That gives you a more relaxed schedule, and leaves space in case one task takes longer than you planned.
And finally don’t worry! Become more aware of your thinking. Are you constantly worrying about the future? It’s much harder than it sounds, but try to remember that worrying today won’t change what happens tomorrow. Every second you spend in worry about the future is a second of the present wasted. Because worrying takes you out of this moment and transports you into the realm of future possibilities, it’s impossible to live in the moment and worry at the same time. Instead, if circumstances are troubling, focus on ways you can solve an existing problem now or otherwise improve the current moment. Spending time focused on what may happen down the line robs you of fully experiencing what is happening now. Life in the moment moves quickly — don’t miss it.
